Aleksander Ceferin has headed the entity since 2016
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has announced that he will not stand and seek to serve another term in the 2027 elections.
The Slovenian, who has led the body since 2016, announced the decision shortly after a change in UEFA rules that would allow him to compete in the next elections to attempt a fourth mandate.
“The reason is that, after a long time, every organization needs new life, but above all because I have been away from my family for seven years,” the lawyer said during a conference in Paris.
If he had participated and won the next elections, Ceferin could have remained at the helm of UEFA until 2031, but the decision was different.
Ceferin is the first Slovenian to lead European football’s top governing body and takes over from former star Michel Platini, who spent eight years in charge of the organisation.
