Dakota Johnson reflects on independent films and criticizes the film industry: ‘They don’t trust creative people’

Dakota Johnson starred in ‘Daddio’ alongside Sean Penn

Dakota Johnson criticized the film industry and reflected on the release of his independent film, Daddio. Although the feature film stars herself and Sean Penn, the actress stated that it took a lot of effort to sell it. “It seems like no one knows what to do,” she said in an interview with L’Officiel (via Variety).

We made a film called Daddio which was sold at Telluride to Sony Classics, which was amazing, but it was a battle to get it done. People are so afraid and I’m like, ‘Why? What will happen if you do something brave?’ It seems like no one knows what to do and everyone is scared. That’s what it looks like. Everyone who makes the decisions is scared. They want to do what’s safe, but what’s safe is boring.

The actress further stated that she is “discovering that the industry is really bleak and extremely discouraging.”

The people running the streaming platforms don’t trust creative people or artists who know what will work, and that will only make us implode. It’s heartbreaking. It’s fucking difficult. It’s so hard to do anything. All the things I’m interested in doing are really different, unique and ahead of anything else.
