King Abdullah of Jordan participates in air aid to Gaza

Jordan’s King Abdullah took part in a humanitarian aid drop in Gaza, state broadcaster Al Mamlaka said on Sunday.

A video showed the monarch in military dress aboard a plane in the Jordanian air force’s latest mission to send emergency medical supplies to field hospitals the country runs in the war-torn enclave. According to the official press, the last airdrop took place on February 6.

The kingdom, which is one of the Arab neighbors pressuring Israel to allow more aid to Gaza, is the only country sending air aid to the enclave, funneling it through these two medical facilities.

Eleven launches have already been carried out, including at least two in collaboration with the French and Dutch air forces, to provide medical aid.

The king, who has strongly supported an end to Israel’s counteroffensive campaign, left on Thursday for a tour of major Western capitals and is expected to meet US President Joe Biden in Washington on February 12 to push for an immediate ceasefire.

Jordan persuaded Israel to allow the World Food Program (WFP) to send deliveries to Gaza via another land route starting in Jordan, helping to ease pressure on the Rafah border crossing, which has limited capacity.

Jordan, which borders the West Bank, fears the Gaza conflict could spread, with more widespread violence by armed settlers encouraged by the army, triggering a large-scale Palestinian exodus across the Jordan River.
