Every Carnival, expert hands come together to transform the avenue on the days of the departure of Afoxé Filhos de Gandhy to Salvador. “We have been producing turbans here for 10 years precisely for this reason. It is very beautiful to see the white carpet on the avenue”, says the artisan Iracema Santos, 53 years old, in conversation with the Earth before the lockdown starts this Sunday, the 11th.
She, who is also a tourism agent, praises the message brought by the Filhos de Gandhy block amid the violence. “There are more than 10 thousand men. Every year the number increases and it’s beautiful. Bringing peace to the avenue is what we need for our life, but it’s not just a month, a carnival day, but the whole year” . We must seek peace,” she muses.

Jane Santos is 39 years old and since she was 15 she has earned extra during Carnival by making turbans for the Sons of Gandhy. With her 24 years of experience as a craftsman, Jane takes pride in passing on her knowledge to her apprentices. “Every year I teach someone to have the same power as me to be part of the Gandhy nation,” she says.
Homage to Caetano and celebration of 75 years
Celebrating its 75th anniversary, Afoxé left its headquarters in Pelourinho towards Campo Grande, with more than 10 thousand members dressed in white and blue.
The release of the block was attended by artists and authorities. Among them the singers Caetano Veloso – who is honored by the block with the theme Beleza Pura, Gilberto Gil, Humberto Carrão, Diogo Almeida, as well as the governor of the State Jerônimo Rodrigues, the vice governor Geraldo Júnior and the Secretary of Culture Bruno Monteiro.
Caetano also thanked for the tribute and took part in the procession above the trio. According to him, afoxé represents a culture of peace for the entire world.
“I don’t even know how to thank such a beautiful tribute. I think that the Sons of Gandhy are one of the responses that Bahia through Brazil must give to the world against war, to face the great risk of war that the world runs”, he declared.
The artist even took his 3-year-old nephew Benjamin to visit Gandhy for the first time.
Alongside his lifelong friend, Gil spoke of the close relationship of affection he has established with the strain. On the occasion, the veteran sang the song Filhos de Gandhi that he composed in honor of the association.
“It’s a joy to hear your grandson say, ‘It’s my first time out in Gandhy.’ I thank everyone. Thank you, Bahia, to these beautiful people,” he said.
Humberto Carrão parades in Gandhy
The actor Humberto Carrão was present at the Filhos de Gandhy afoxé parade this Sunday 11th, in Pelourinho, in the Historic Center of Salvador.
For the first time on the block, the artist stressed that the desire to wear traditional white clothes pushed him to stay longer in the capital of Bahia. “This was why I stayed, to get out of Gandhy. It’s beautiful,” he revealed.
Together with actor Evaldo Macarrão, the duo enjoyed the festivities in Salvador. Co-star of the soap opera Renascer, Evaldo revealed that he will present the best of Bahia. “I can’t help but talk about this beautiful friendship we’ve built, it’s been a great gift. I’m very happy to be here for the first time with him by my side,” he said.
