Dancing With The Stars ex Peta Murgatroyd talks about miscarriage she suffered while her husband was in Ukraine

The journey to expand their family has been difficult for the elderly dance with the stars professionals Peta Murgatroyd and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Although Murgatroyd gave birth to their son Shai Aleksander in 2017, they suffered greatly in the following years, with the couple talking about a particularly difficult situation they faced when Murgatroyd suffered a miscarriage while Chmerkovskiy was in his native Ukraine.

In October 2021, Peta Murgatroyd said she just tested positive for COVID and was really struggling because Maksim Chmerkovskiy was out of the country and serving as a judge on the Ukrainian version of dance with the stars. He called an ambulance when he got to the point where he was lying on the ground, unable to move, his breathing starting to hurt. Murgatroyd said people put her husband on speakerphone when the doctor came in to tell him what was going on, saying:

I thought I was bringing out some bad news. I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ His face dropped. She said, ‘Did you know you were pregnant?’

In fact, Peta Murgatroyd didn’t know she was pregnant. Nor, of course, Maks Chmerkovskiy; However, the couple recalled starting to celebrate at that time, as they only heard the doctor say, “You’re pregnant.” The misunderstanding and eventual realization only compounded the pain the dancer felt at not being able to be there to support his wife. He said:

don’t be there [with her]… She is crazy. She makes you feel helpless.

Peta Murgatroyd said she had already been to Ukraine to see the previous one masked dancer competitor for the sole purpose of trying to conceive, but after testing positive for COVID, she hadn’t even considered her attempts to have worked. In fact, she thought the bleeding she had seen a few days earlier was due to her period. It turns out that not knowing about her pregnancy actually helped her overcome losing her. In her words:

in the end I had no idea [I was pregnant], which in hindsight was better for my recovery because I didn’t have that super joy “I’m pregnant again!” I just had the “You lost it” moment.

Sadly, this wasn’t the first time the couple had suffered such a loss. Peta Murgatroyd said the low point of their relationship came in the fall of 2020, when she had her first miscarriage in a Whole Foods bathroom, just five weeks into her pregnancy. Nine months later, she said she was pregnant again and wanted to fly to New York to surprise Maksim Chmerkovskiy with the news, but she suffered a miscarriage days before the trip.

However, the couple did not give up hope of expanding their family. They have started the IVF process and are working with a fertility team, who believe Peta Murgatroyd’s fertility problems could be caused by PCOS. The dancer says they’re in a better place now that she and her husband have a new plan:

For the first time in nearly two years, I feel moved. I’m in a much happier place. I have some answers. I have no words but hope and positivity. Fingers crossed it works.

Peta Murgatroyd appeared in 13 seasons of dance with the stars, winning the Mirrorball Trophy twice: in season 14 with Donald Driver and in season 22 with Nyle DiMarco. He last appeared in season 29 in 2020. Meanwhile, Maksim Chmerkovskiy danced for 17 seasons of the show and won season 18 with Meryl Davis. He announced his departure from the show after season 25 in 2017, amid the rumors of a fight between him and his dance partner Vanessa Lachey . Murgatroyd and Chmerkovskiy started dating in 2012, get married in 2017 after the birth of his son.

dance with the stars switch to broadcast for season 31, so you’ll need to have a Disney + subscription to see who will win the next Mirrorball. However, Maks Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd will not appear as they continue to try to expand their family. Our best wishes to the couple, and we hope the troubled times are behind us.
