Nokia on Wednesday unveiled an artificial intelligence (AI)-based tool that generates messages for workers, including alerts about faulty machines based on real-time data and advice on how to increase industrial production.
The tool, “MX Workmate”, will expand Nokia’s existing communications technology used by industrial customers by leveraging artificial intelligence’s Generative Large Language Model (LLM) to write human-like texts, the company said in a statement.
This could include early warnings about machine failures, along with recommended actions for repairs, solutions to increase quality and production rates or manage factory incidents, Stephane Daeuble, Nokia’s head of business solutions marketing, told Reuters.
The Finland-based company already provides 4G and 5G technology that enables internal communications or helps industries connect to machine sensor data, among other uses.
“Now the idea is to have an assistant that helps the worker understand all this data,” Daeuble said, adding that Nokia is launching the tool as manufacturers face a shortage of skilled workers.
Popularized last year by ChatGPT, generative AI can create human-like content, and while its regulation is in its early stages, many experts say it could raise legal or ethical questions.
Nokia’s tool complies with Operational Technology (OT) regulations, but it may take time for companies to trust the “forward-thinking” technology, which first needs proper testing and fine-tuning to work across industries, has Daeuble stated.
While some aspects are still being researched, including dealing with hallucinations by artificial intelligence, the tool “must be accurate, clear and correct. And it must be traceable and moderated,” he said, adding that there would be initial guarantees , such as as a person who validates requests from AI users.
“Maybe a year, a year and a half, before we see the first real implementation,” he said.
Nokia will present the first versions of the tool at the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, in late February.
