‘Macetando’, the carnival song, demonstrates that the celebrations cannot be subjected to religious patrol

Hit by Ivete Sangalo and Ludmilla was at the center of a controversy regarding an apocalyptic “prediction” of Baby do Brasil during the carnival

He gave what the streets already pointed out: Macedingsong recorded by Ivete Sangalo in collaboration with Ludmilla, it was chosen as the carnival song of 2024. The election, held since 1994 by the Troféu Bahia Folia, on TV Bahia, showed that the hit received more than three million votes, or 52.87 % of the total, and it was surprising Loose legby Léo Santana, the 2023 champion.

Maceding, which mixes funk elements with Bahian pagoda, was at the center of the biggest controversies during this carnival. Ivete, when he passes with his trio in front of the Band Folia studio, where Child from Brazil was performing, he stopped to do something very common in the Bahia carnival: a threesome. Or a duet between singers.

At first, Ivete and Baby exchanged public praise. They showed intimacy. Together they decided to sing Rio boy, Baby’s hit, with a fast pace. A truly festive atmosphere between two important singers for the Salvador carnival.

At the time of separation, however, Baby used the microphone to give a religious speech. A shepherd, or popstora, as she calls herself, Baby said the apocalypse is likely to occur in “five or 10 years.” She advised the audience to look for Jesus and asked Ivete to sing Vigil, a song about the end times. The child was free to express himself.

Ivete’s response was cheerful, in the spirit of the celebrations. However, it was not liked by the audience Baby was aimed at. Obviously Baby didn’t give her speech in vain.

“I won’t let it happen. There is no apocalypse when we cheat the apocalypse,” said Ivete, who preferred to sing Maceding. Ivete also talked about how God has greater energy. It wasn’t understood.

Although the dialogue has been classified by some as a “carnival meme”, Ivete has been attacked by religious people. The next day she had problems with her threesome. Many attributed the incident to her speech. Ivete, at other times, praised the orixás, entities linked to religions of African origin.

Despite all this, Ivete reigned at Carnival 2024. In addition to winning the Bahia Folia Trophy, he reached the top of the most listened to songs chart on Spotify, something he hadn’t achieved for a long time. To the State, 15 days before Carnival, the singer said she was happy because Maceding people liked it.

Ivete ended its carnival on popcorn day – the parade without ropes and abadás – literally in the arms of revelers.

The episode involving Baby and Ivete indicates that the carnival – an authentic celebration of the people, of which they are the protagonists – cannot be subjected to attempts at evangelization of any kind. Art and popular events must be spared this personnel, whether they like it or not.

A symbol of this useless patrol was the criticism of the plot Rats and vultures, abandon my imagination, presented by Beija-Flor in 1989 in Sapucaí. By covering Christ with the phrase “even if he is forbidden, he watches over us”, the carnival artist Joãosinho Trinta has stripped many people. Discomfort was inevitable. Carnival has survived and Sapucaí, year after year, is the stage in which to denounce social injustices.

Renowned singer with a thirty-year career, Ivete has suffered a popular attack unprecedented in her career. Weeks before I had already received suggestions from another important Brazilian singer for choosing to sing Macedinga song inspired by a sexual expression enshrined in funk.

Ivete, unfortunately, has been defended by few. Including her peers, those who should protect the freedom of art and celebration. Few took a stand.

Daniela Mercury, after the problems encountered by the singer in her trio, dedicated her show to her friend, but did not directly mention the episode with Baby. More incisive was the presenter Xuxa, a friend of Ivete, who said she was disappointed by Baby.

In August 2023, Baby said Estadao that God sent her a request to “hold the lines” of Brazilian music. “You won’t see me dancing with my ass in the air. I gotta hold on to the music, wow! I don’t care about sex appeal,” she said. However, she said she was not an “accusing” religious woman, but a “connected” one. “Religiosity is a danger,” she concluded.
