Like Beyoncé and Britney Spears have done before, Lopez opens up about her personal life to clarify distorted versions of her journey in search of love
In 2014, Solange Knowles appeared inside an elevator pushing and kicking his brother-in-law Jay-Z, before being restrained by a security guard. At the time, none of those involved spoke about what happened. Two years later, Beyonce launched Lemonadeher sixth studio album, in which she exposed a crisis in her marriage with the rapper and an alleged betrayal by Jay-Z with one “Becky with the good hair”.
Before the event with Beyonceanother artist, Britney Spears, also had his personal life exposed in the media. From building his career in music to romance with Justin TimberlakeFrom raising her children to her troubled relationship with her own family, the Pop Princess’ name was dragged through the mud as she watched in silence. In 2023, the artist released the biography The Woman in Mein which he took control of his story.
Jennifer Lopezas well as Beyonce It is Britney Spears, was created as an artist at a time when social media did not exist and talent was a prerequisite for success. Still, there was already an interest in the personal lives of these personalities and, in the desire to satisfy this curiosity, a lot was said, even if it wasn’t true. Now, it’s time to J.Lo do the same and use your own words to tell your story, with the release of the album and film This Is Me… Nowthis Friday, February 16th, which clarify distorted versions about his journey in search of love.
What’s new is a sequel to the album This Is Me… Thenreleased in 2002, a time when the artist was facing the end of her second marriage, with the dancer Chris Juddand the beginning of the relationship with Ben Affleck. In production, Lopez she was explicit about that period in her life and sang about the attempts to save her marriage, the improvement in her life with the arrival of a new person, overcoming the breakup and the satisfaction of finding a new love.
At that time, the album was already a big love story about the romance between Jennifer Lopez It is Ben Affleck, but people wanted even more and the relationship ended up becoming a huge media spectacle, which resulted in the couple breaking up a few years later. Now, twenty years later, the artist opens up again about her journey not only to find the great love of her life, to whom she is now married, but also to find self-love, which allowed her to experience it all again.
Despite the album being a new great romantic cliché, the film seeks to go further and explore, through different cinematographic genres, from romantic comedies to science fiction, the story of a woman in love, but with a broken heart, who needs to understand yourself so you can then give your love to someone else.
Due to the narrative choices proposed by Jennifer Lopezwho is also the film’s screenwriter, This Is Me… Now: A Love Story looks like a mess, but manages to organize itself enough to get somewhere, thanks to the director’s skills Dave Meyers (Death Hitchhikers) to be able to navigate, even superficially, through all the proposed genres.
To increase the novelty, Lopez recruited names like Jane Fonda (Grace & Frankie), Sofia Vergara (Griselda), Keke Palmer (The Scammers), Jenifer Lewis (Black-ish), the singer Kim Petrasthe rapper Post Malonethe physical Neil deGrasse Tyson and even the mystical Sadhguru to act as astrological guides for her character, which takes the production up a notch and provides some of the most fun moments in the story, due to the interactions of the signs that control the artist’s life.
None of this, however, makes This Is Me… Now: A Love Story nothing more than a large set of music videos that, watched in the intended order, tell a love story bordering on cheesy, but should speak well to fans of J.Lo, who accompanied her during this journey and hoped to see their idol at her best, as she appears in the production. It’s not something that will change the music or film industry, but it could bring sighs from some passionate hearts.
