MSI Claw loses to ROG Ally in the first matches

MSI Claw’s Intel Core Ultra 7 155H APU performs worse than ROG Ally’s AMD Z1 Extreme in early gaming tests; watch

Some Bilibili profiles have published the first tests of the MSI Claw, notebook equipped with Intel Core Ultra 7 155Hand the results place it behind the APU OMG Z1 extreme ASUS The ROG ally. Despite the similar specs of the console as a whole, MSI Claw’s Meteor Lake chip comes with some design limitations that could negatively impact overall performance.

Depending on the game, the frame rate variation is already quite significant in the highest performance mode, but becomes even more pronounced in the power-saving modes. In Shadow of the Tomb Raiderthe difference is around 18% with TDP at 25W, and increases to 42% in economy mode, from just 15W.

Arcy graphics limit performance

Considering that the MSI Claw has 16 physical cores – double the ROG Ally – the expectation is that it will perform better, even with frequencies of 4.8 GHz, slightly lower than the Ally’s 5.1 GHz. However, the Arc iGPU with only 8 Xe cores and a clock speed of 2.25 GHz seems to represent a bottleneck for the Claw.

In benchmarks with TDP unlocked a Shadow of the Tomb Raider, you can see that both iGPUs are working at 100%. However, the AMD graphics solution manages to push the processor up to 50% utilization, while the Arc graphics locks the Core Ultra 7 between 30% and 38%.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Z1 Extreme guarantees a maximum limitation of 30W, while the U7 155H easily overcomes this barrier, and still delivers fewer frames and at much higher temperatures. Thinking about the recent history of Intel with Arc graphics, discrete Alchemist cards were also shown Significant performance improvements after driver optimizationfirmware and proprietary technologies.

Therefore, nothing prevents the performance difference scenario from changing significantly after launch. However, considering only the current moment, notebooks equipped with the Z1 Extreme do not seem to be threatened by possible models with Core Ultra solutions, at least not with the U7 155H.
