When the project was in its infancy, several major actors were approached to step into Cassandra Webb’s shoes. Among them were Charlize Theron, Amy Adams and Dakota Johnson. Madame Web belongs to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSMU), which features characters and stories from Marvel comics, especially those centered around Spider-Man, as its name suggests. SSMU Films is produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel Entertainment and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing.
The SSMU takes place parallel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In addition to Madame Web, SSMU’s current feature films are Venom and its sequels Morbius and Kraven, slated for August 2024. Other movies on Hypno-Hustler, Spider-Woman and El Muerto are in the works.

In the comics, the character of Cassandra Webb first appeared in November 1980 in issue #210. The Amazing Spider-Man. He suffers from myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune neuromuscular disease that leaves him blind and paralyzed.
