Why you should wash your water bottle every day

If you go more than 5 days without washing the bottle, it will accumulate more bacteria than a dog’s water container.

With the busyness of everyday life and the constant worry of so many other tasks, we often neglect simple habits that can have a significant impact on our health. One of these often overlooked habits is regularly cleaning the water bottle we use daily.

OR Earth spoke with microbiota biomedical practitioner Roberto Martins Figueiredo, Dr. Bactéria, to discover the potential consequences of ignoring this seemingly trivial practice.

According to the expert, if you go more than five days without washing your water bottle, a greater amount of bacteria will accumulate than, for example, a dog’s water container would accumulate.

“What happens is that we have some so-called opportunistic germs in our mouths, for example candida, which causes oral candidiasis, which is moniliasis, the popular thrush,” explains Dr. Bactéria.

The specialist explains that if the bacteria multiply, they can become stronger than the immune resistance of those who drink the water, and in addition to the famous “thrush” other mouth infections can develop.

“The amount of mutans streptococcus, the bacteria that causes tooth decay, may also increase. You may have a large increase in a fungus, a yeast, called candida albicans, which is responsible for candidiasis. So there is this health risk,” warns the professional.

Dr. Bactéria suggests cleaning the water bottle daily with the help of detergent and a brush commonly used to clean baby bottles.

“Once a month you fill it up to your mouth with water, add a teaspoon of bicarbonate and leave it overnight. The next day just rinse it and it’s ready,” advises the biomedical professional for a deeper cleaning.
