A busy weekend for awards, a month before the Oscars. While BAFTA released its list of awards on Sunday, February 18, the Annie Awards did the same the day before.
And crowned the Spider-Man of the entire Spider-Man, the author of the complete hit in this 51st edition of what we think of as the Oscars of animation, because it is the biggest ceremony dedicated to this form.
In no less than seven network titles (…out of a possible seven), including Best Picture, the feature film made the competition short. And leaves with the same results as its predecessor, which went on to win an Oscar in 2019. Did it happen again on March 10? It is not necessary.
My robot friend ambushed?
Because only three of the last five Annie Awards have won Oscars in the process (Spider-Man New Generation, Soul and Pinocchio). And that The Boy and the Heron looks like a strong contender, having won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA and racked up two Annie Awards (Best Character Animation and Best Story).
Not to forget My Robot Friend, which may appear as an outsider, was awarded the prize for Best Independent Film this Saturday, February 17th. The stakes are high, just like the Oscar race, and that’s probably where one of the surprises will be in a ceremony that generally contains few, as trends consolidate over the weeks and above the award prices.
