Warner Bros. has released the official synopsis of “Furiosa”, a spin-off of “Mad Max” focusing on the main female character from the movie “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015).
The text reads: “As the world collapses, young Furiosa is kidnapped from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a large horde of motorcyclists led by Warlord Dementus. Wandering the doomed desert, they find the citadel controlled by. Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants struggle for power and control, Furiosa will have to survive many challenges to find her way home. “
The studio also confirmed that filming had already begun, though star Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”) revealed the start of work in early June with a photo from the set.
Hemsworth will play one of the film’s villains, which will see actress Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) in the lead role, originally played by Charlize Theron in the award-winning 2015 film.
Director George Miller, who has directed the “Mad Max” franchise since the first film in 1979, returns to the director’s chair and even wrote the screenplay, exploring the past of the character introduced in “Fury Road” as the leader of an uprising against the cruel Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne, died in 2020).
According to Variety, Miller considered using special effects to rejuvenate Theron and allow her to play Furiosa again, but ended up dismissing the possibility, finding Taylor-Joy to be her young version of the character.
The project has been developed since the pre-production of “Estrada da Fúria”. Miller and his co-writer, Nick Lathouris, built extensive stories for every character in that film, from antagonist Immortan Joe to secondary Doof Warrior wielding a flaming guitar. But it was Furiosa who received the most attention.
Miller tried to answer questions about what the character’s life was like in the idyllic “Green Place” and how she became the relentless warrior seen in “Fury Road”. In this creative process, he found Furiosa’s backstory so compelling that she decided to develop a full script on her character, even before filming “Fury Road” began.
But the project is only now taking off because the director and Warner have quarreled over the right to sue for financial rights related to “Fury Road”. That’s why Miller decided to prioritize another “Fury Road” film: “Three Thousand Years of Longing”, which premiered on May 20 at the Cannes Film Festival.
With that work done and his conflict with Warner over, he returned to the prologue project.
“Furiosa” will be released in May 2024.
