The World Food Program reports violent attacks against trucks transporting food in the north of the Palestinian enclave. Officials describe “unprecedented levels of desperation.” The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) reported this Tuesday (20/02) that food deliveries to the northern Gaza Strip, which resumed this Sunday after a three-week pause, were to be interrupted again after i The organization’s convoys have become targets of looting and acts of violence.
PAM officials reported that “several trucks were looted […] a driver was attacked” and “shots were fired”. “On Monday, the journey of a second northbound convoy faced total chaos and violence as civil order collapsed.”
The WFP reported “unprecedented levels of desperation” in Gaza and was forced to suspend food deliveries “until conditions exist that will allow safe distribution.”
The UN estimates that the war has left a population of 2.2 million people on the brink of starvation and displaced 1.7 million Palestinians in Gaza.
The war in Gaza began with attacks by the extremist group Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed around 1,200 people. The Israeli response, with intense bombing followed by a large-scale ground offensive, resulted in nearly 30,000 deaths, according to the enclave’s Ministry of Health.
The crisis worsens at Khan Yunis hospital
The World Health Organization (WHO) said it carried out two missions to transfer 32 seriously ill patients – including two children – from Nasser Hospital in the city of Khan Yunis between Sunday and Monday. The town, in the south of the enclave, is the subject of a siege imposed by Israeli troops.
At least 130 patients and 15 doctors and nurses remain in hospital, after days of fighting around the complex. WHO officials reported “indescribable scenes” in conditions conducive to disease transmission.
Nasser Hospital has no electricity or running water; waste, both hospital and municipal, creates a fertile ground for disease,” the organization said in a statement.
Israeli soldiers raided the hospital last week. The WHO said its staff were denied access to the site on Saturday and Sunday. The intensive care unit stopped functioning and patients were transferred to other hospitals in the region.
The warnings from United Nations humanitarian agencies come as Israel prepares an offensive on Rafah, in the south of the Palestinian enclave. Located on the border with Egypt, the city is home to 1.5 million refugees who headed to the region after Israel ordered the evacuation of large areas north of Gaza.
