Flamengo beat Boavista 4-0 in one of the best performances under Tite, but Pedro’s below-expected performance attracted attention. Although he scored a goal, the striker was booed for missing a penalty and wasting other chances. In the press conference, coach Tite commented on this dispute with Gabigol for a place in attack. “My business is constantly exposed to pressure. Even a top athlete is.”
After fans showed dissatisfaction with Pedro’s departure, Tite revealed that everyone at Flamengo is under pressure and spoke about the dispute with Gabigol in attack. “I’m also under pressure. My business is constantly exposed to pressure. The same goes for high-level athletes. Some fans express themselves in a certain way because of their style. If it took part in the fans, they definitely wouldn’t. I want to have Tite as a coach. What they have to have is dignity of work, fair competition, doing their best and putting the team above everything else.”
With the absence of Gerson, Pulgar and Allan, Tite was forced to make changes to the starting lineup, the coach commented on this change and the balance of the team. “When only one player from the core team comes in, the situation is different. So we are all adapting and looking for that point of balance. In terms of numbers, when the goal difference is high, it gives signs of a balanced team.”
Also present at the press conference was assistant coach Cléber Xavier, who spoke about the different roles De La Cruz can play. “Tactically De La Cruz is a player who plays two or three central roles, he can play with a second (midfielder), a 10 and we used him on the side of the pitch, making the floating movement, in the first moments. In this match he played from within, more or less like he plays in the national team.”
Tite also spoke about the experience of De La Cruz further back and Arrascaeta up front, without closing the door to other teams. “It’s one of the possibilities, they played a lot. But it’s also about not having a predictable team and having other alternatives, as we have the midfield quartet. De La Cruz played a lot, he was very articulate.”
One of the highlights of the defeat against Boavista was the young Igor Jesus, starting for the second time in a row and for Tite the merits of this are structural. “First of all I want to praise the work of the Flamengo base. It’s not me, as vain as it may be, but it is the Flamengo base that makes the athlete work well both from a technical and disciplinary point of view. All I have to do is help you care to include these young people in a structured team.”
