Poor Creatures, a film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favorite – 2018), is gaining more and more notoriety. The science fiction work, which chronicles the self-discovery of a young woman who commits suicide and comes back to life, has already raised $100 million worldwide, according to the portal Collider.
The film was nominated for 11 categories at the 2024 Oscars, some of which include Best Film, Best Actress and Best Director.
Box office success
An adventure of self-discovery
Since its release, Poor Creatures has attracted attention with its curious plot. The opera tells the story of Bella (Emma Stone), a young woman who commits suicide, but is brought back to life by the controversial scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe).
Upon her return, Bella no longer perceives the world around her as before. According to Dr. Godwin Baxter, her body’s muscles and her brain’s electrical impulses are out of sync: She walks and talks with a “delay” because her body can’t keep up with the speed of brain stimuli.
Despite the hardships, the girl now sees life with new eyes: she has more enthusiasm and interest and embarks on an adventure of self-discovery, which leads her to an escape that the scientist did not expect.
The film is based on the book of the same name by Alasdair Gray, published in 1992, which has not yet been translated in Brazil. But, given this success, it shouldn’t be long before its Portuguese version arrives.
Poor Creatures arrived in Brazilian cinemas in February and is still showing.
