Joker gets a new scarier version based on cosmic horror

The Joker has acquired several facets in recent years and now receives an even more disturbed one, rooted in cosmic horror.

The Joker is one of the most intriguing and fascinating characters of DC Comics, above all for his mysterious past and for the various facets that have already appeared and multiplied in recent years. Now, in a special miniseries set in Lovecraftian cosmic horror, the Clown Prince of Crime gets an even more disturbed and frightening version.

Beware of spoilers for Batman: City of Madness #3!

In Batman: City of MadnessBatman has a C’thulu version of himself called Batman Below (or Batman Below) and must investigate this mystery, which involves Amadeus’ son Arkham and the origins of this new Joker.

To cure his son Arthur, after the death of his mother and sister, Amadeus ends up making a pact with an Eldritch being. As with most Eldritch affairs, the human is deceived and thus ends up in Gotham Below (or Gotham Below).

But Amadeus does not discover that his real son has been kidnapped, as a “copy” of Arthur remains with him. And yes, this guy ends up becoming the Joker of this world. Cosmic horror suggests that there is always something completely unknown, irresistible and invincible that haunts human beings and drives them crazy.

This suits the Joker quite well, as one of his cruelest and most terrifying abilities is to completely corrupt the minds of his victims, including those with a strong psychological makeup.

It seems that DC Comics has plans to make this Joker a multiversal threat, so it’s very likely that we’ll see the Cosmic Horror Clown challenging the sanity of many people out there on other Earths – and, of course, Batman’s representatives on every Earth are a potential target.

We still don’t know for sure the approaches, the unique skills and their ability to corrupt people’s minds; but everything indicates that he also has all the tools to steal the sanity of whoever he wants.
