Disney: This little detail makes Lilo’s character even more exciting

Aliens, sandy beaches, surfboards on the crystal clear waters of Hawaii and… Elvis Presley songs!

Directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois in 2002, Lilo and Stitch is a truly beloved Disney classic, especially thanks to the friendship that unites its two protagonists: Lilo, a little orphan girl raised by her older sister and rejected by her classmates, and Stitch. , an alien being genetically engineered by a mad scientist and designed to bring destruction to the galaxy.

Composed by the great Alan Silvestri (especially known for having signed the scores for Back to the Future, Forrest Gump or Avengers), the soundtrack of Lilo and Stitch is also filled with traditional Hawaiian songs, but also famous Elvis hits, e.g. dog dog, Heartbreak Hotel or Suspicious thoughts.

A “truly unique” heroine

But why did the artists of the Disney studios choose the King as the music for their feature film? Aside from the obvious connection the famous singer has to Hawaii (where he made several movies and gave one of his most famous concerts), Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, the two directors of the film, explained that it offered him an extra dimension. Lilo’s character:

“The idea that Lilo likes Elvis’ music came from the fact that we wanted to make it really unique from the start”– explained Sanders at the microphone animated views (Recently delivered SlashFilms).

“We also imagined that he found his mother’s records. He never listens to CDs in the movie, he only has vinyl records and a small record player that he carries around.”

According to the two filmmakers, this little girl’s obsession with Elvis’ music therefore takes her right back to the loss of her mother and thus helps to heighten the emotions around the character.

As for knowing in what circumstances the King’s hits should be “placed” in the film, the directors were satisfied with the script:

“You could say it evolved from the situations that Lilo and Stitch found themselves in. (…) It wasn’t difficult to find songs that could illustrate almost every important event in the film that we wanted to put to music. For example, when they spend the day together, it was a natural choice to use Stuck on You.
