On September 5, 1993, viewers of the detective series Fallen Angels first saw the name of the famous actor Tom Cruise, who is believed to be the director, on the screen. They don’t know that this is the last time…
Tom Hanks also filmed an episode, we’ll tell you about it here!
Professional con artist Mitch Ellison (The OC’s Peter Gallagher) steals $20,000 from his wife Betty (Nancy Travis) — also in the game — while taking a train to work in Las Vegas. Except he loses everything and finds himself broke, in the middle of the desert. That’s when he meets Babe (Isabella Rossellini) and her husband Martin (John S. Reilly) and finds himself embroiled in a scam that will turn his life upside down.
“Weakest Episode”
The episode, titled The Frightening Frammis, was inspired by a story by Jim Thompson. The Secret Journal of Alfred Hitchcock In 1957, a magazine that used the director’s name and which sometimes served as a “story pool” for the series “The Alfred Hitchcock Presentation”. In French, this story was published as a book under the title Nice salad.
This rather caricatured story is described as an episode “the weakest” from season 1 Los Angeles Times. Indeed, a few surprises come from waking up the audience and after the very “film noir” introduction, the rest is pretty consistent, despite the actors involved.
Stylistic poverty
As for Tom Cruise, his directorial debut came after The Firm, but we can’t say we see a very clear touch or vision emerging from 30 minutes of The Frightening Frammis. A very little play of light and shade is not enough to hide all the stylistic poverty.

Isabella Rossellini and Peter Gallagher
But make up your mind, because Fallen Angels is available on DVD in France, with cameos from Tom Hanks, Steven Soderbergh, Alfonso Cuarón, Peter Bogdanovic, Agnieszka Holland and Kiefer Sutherland. Big names, it’s interesting how they “fit” into the mold of the series.
