Abel’s assistant, Vitor Castanheira, could be a distant relative of Antonio Carlos Castanheira, president of Lusa
Palmeiras will face Portuguesa this Wednesday (28), in Canindé, at 7.30pm, in a delayed match of the fifth round of the Campeonato Paulista. And the match could also mark a curious family meeting. After all, there is the possibility of a relationship between Vítor Castanheira, one of the members of Verdão’s technical committee, and Antonio Carlos Castanheira, president of Lusa.
The two still don’t know if a true relationship really exists. However, in an interview with ‘ESPN’, the president of Portuguesa, Antonio Carlos Castanheira, believes that Abel Ferreira’s assistant could be a second degree relative.
“I haven’t had the chance to talk to Vítor about this yet. In Portugal we are not sure whether our fathers or mothers are uncles. But everything leads us to believe that we are relatives or second cousins. In Portugal, in the north, It’s common for cousins to get married. I think we’re related, yes. Second cousins, maybe. He looks like me, but I’m prettier, I have more hair. From what I told my uncles in Portugal, we’re related, yes. Because our families are originally from the north of Portugal”, said the president.
Vitor Castanheira, however, was more skeptical in his response. On Verdão’s advice, the assistant said the two are unlikely to be related.

Abel Ferreira and his team face Portuguesa, a team from Portugal’s largest colony, for the first time after almost four years in Brazil. Furthermore, Verdão faces Lusa again after almost 10 years without knowing what it means to play against Canindé’s team. After all, the team spent many years in the state’s lower leagues, as well as never being able to compete in a national tournament again.
However, it is worth remembering that Abel Ferreira and Portuguesa have already had a moment of affection. In 2021, Palmeiras faced Santo André in Canindé, in a match valid for that year’s State Championship.
