The second part of the science fiction epic Dunedirected by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049), debuts in Brazilian cinemas this Thursday (29th). In Dune – Part 2Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) teams up with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen as he seeks revenge on the conspirators who destroyed his family.
As the title suggests, the film continues the story of Dune, also directed by Villeneuve, released in 2021. The science fiction is based on the book of the same name (620 pages long!) written by Frank Herbert. In this universe, the galaxy is organized into planetary fiefdoms. And Atreides, heir to the ruling family of the planet Arrakis, is about to become a sort of messiah for the galaxy.

Dune – Part 2 in criticism
The film will hit the big screen in Brazil this Thursday, but journalists from some media have already seen the sequel to the science fiction epic told by director Denis Villeneuve.
Cesar Soto, for example, opens his review, published in G1with the following wording: “Dune – Part 2 It’s everything science fiction should be. Soto also states in his text that the second part of Dune is the “perfect meeting of grandiose action and relevant discussion on complex topics such as religious fanaticism and fascism”.
His perception echoes the title of the text published by Cesare Gaglioni in Nexo newspaper: “How religious extremism drives the history of Dune 2“. For Gaglioni, while the first film focused on the ecology of the fictional universe and criticized capitalism, its sequel “places religious fundamentalism and political fanaticism at the center of the plot.”

Carlos Redel points out in his review, published in GZHWhat Dune – Part 2 “simplifies the original work for the sake of action and visual spectacle.” Redel also warns: “those who go to the cinema looking for conclusions may be disappointed”. That’s because, according to him, the sequence ends with “a huge hook for a new part.” In fact, Villeneuve has already said that he intends to do so to adapt Messiah of the dunes (1969).
