Trump’s lawyer says Georgia prosecutor should be disqualified

Former US President Donald Trump’s lawyer told a Georgia state judge on Friday that the prosecutor who accused the former president of attempted interference in the 2020 election should be disqualified, for lying to the court about a relationship he was maintaining with his primary assistant. The attorney, Steve Sadow, said Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s affidavit that her relationship with Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade did not begin before she hired him is not credible. “When you have the appearance of impropriety, Georgia law is clear: It is enough to disqualify,” Sadow told Judge Scott McAfee. Leader of the Republican race for the party’s nomination in the 2024 presidential election, Trump and others are accused of illegally pressuring state authorities to reverse their 2020 defeat, when the current president, Joe Biden, defeated him in the state. The Republican and 14 other co-defendants have pleaded innocent. A decision in favor of Trump and his allies could further slow down the trial, which already faces a potentially long road to a final judgment. The arguments presented Friday before McAfee come after other hearings in which Willis admitted to having an affair with Wade, but she accused the defense attorney of lying about the timing and nature of their relationship. Willis and Wade have said the relationship began only after he was hired, and prosecutors argue the case is legally irrelevant because it does not harm the defendants.
