In a statement, the Holy See press office explained that Francis and Scholz expressed “satisfaction with the good relations and fruitful collaboration that exist between the Vatican and Germany, underlining the importance of the faith of Christian society in German society.” .

Scholz, in turn, revealed to the press that he had spoken with the Pontiff about “world problems”, such as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, but also about topics such as “immigration, social justice, coexistence between peoples”. .

“We are concerned about Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. We are concerned with the war in the Middle East and discussing how to bring peace to our world,” the German leader said.

Furthermore, Scholz defined the meeting with Jorge Bergoglio as “personally important” in these “difficult times in which we live”.

During the private audience, the two also exchanged gifts: the leader of the Catholic Church gave the chancellor the bronze work entitled “Social Love”, depicting a child helping another to get up, with the writing “L ‘love helps’. Scholz reciprocated with the official Euro2024 ball and a porcelain figurine of a bear with the German coat of arms. .
