When The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 2001, the expectation of general viewers and fans of the most important work of JRR Tolkien in particular it was total and absolute. For the first time in decades and after many attempts, a director had accomplished the task of translating the British author’s rich fantasy history into cinematic language, and everything seemed to indicate that he had done it very well. The reception was spectacular: universal critical acclaim and a spectacular gross of $898 million.
However, while in 2001 we awaited with emotion and curiosity The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the setting of the third film in the trilogy of Peter Jackson it was very different in 2003: the Lord of the Rings film saga was already a worldwide phenomenon and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King it had to be perfect.
This was what was expected, at least, from the film destined to give the final touch to the trilogy. The icing on a cake in which, until now, nothing had gone wrong. And so it was: the film not only lived up to the expectations of the greatest fantasy saga of all time, but managed to exceed them, still being considered, twenty years later, one of the greatest box office successes of all time.
