“It seems like a position from the Kama Sutra,” says Barroso, commenting on the language used in the judiciary

The magistrate defended the use of simpler terms and said it was necessary to abandon the idea “that those who speak complicated are intelligent”

The president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, said that it is necessary to abandon the idea that the use of complicated language is a sign of intelligence. Encouraging more accessible communication from the judiciary, he relaxedly compared a legal term to the Kama Sutra, an Indian text that addresses human sexual behavior. The statements were made on Monday 4th, during a conference at the PUC-SP.

“We already have serious problems in the Law, which is sometimes a very strange terminology. We are capable of saying things like: in aforamento, if there is a plurality of emphyteutas, a cabecel is elected. It’s too bad. We already have infractions” Embargoes. There are mutual fondnesses. Forgive me, but it sounds like a Kama Sutra position. We must stop with this business of thinking that those who speak complicated are intelligent”, said the minister.

Elsewhere in the conference, Barroso stressed that the politicization of the Armed Forces had a significant impact on democracy and that they had “made a mess” in the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). Furthermore, he stressed that the military invited to monitor election security during the 2022 elections was influenced by “bad leadership”. At the time, the Armed Forces raised doubts, without presenting evidence, about the security of the electoral process.

“Since 1988, the Armed Forces in Brazil have had exemplary behavior, of non-interference or interference, in the fulfillment of their constitutional missions (…). However, they have been manipulated and thrown into politics by bad leadership. They have done a mess with the TSE. Invited to contribute to security and transparency, (the military) were induced to raise false suspicions. When loyalty is a value that is taught in the Armed Forces,” he added.

Barroso also highlighted the democratic risk arising from the large-scale spread of disinformation through the use of artificial intelligence. He highlighted the threat posed by deepfakes.
