It is a fact that audiences go less to the cinema to see films about heroes. But is there really fatigue associated with this type of content?
For Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, the answer is no. And his answer is worth a lot, given that he is immediately above the head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige.
Iger spoke on the topic during the Telecommunications and Media Group conference last Tuesday (5). According to the website The Hollywood journalist, the executive admitted the “difficult moment” that the sector is going through, but rejected this idea of tiredness. For him, what people want are “great films”:
“A lot of people think it’s public fatigue, but it’s not public fatigue. They want great films. Just that. And if you build it right, they will come and there are countless examples of this. Some are ours and some are others’. Oppenheimer is a perfect example of this. It’s a fantastic film.”said Bob Iger.
Oppenheimer it was a great example set by the head of Disney. Christopher Nolan’s film was the third best film at the box office last year and is an Oscar favorite. It was also responsible for Disney’s first box office loss in many years.
To be more precise, it was the first time in 8 years that Disney did not take first place at the box office among the major film studios. It was actually surpassed by Universal, which had it Super Mario Bros AND Oppenheimer enter your exits.
Canceled projects
While not admitting that there is format fatigue, Bob Iger has admitted that he has had to cut some projects in recent months because they were not considered interesting enough.
And here I open a parenthesis to comment… What do you mean that they weren’t interesting enough? You mean that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Was it considered good enough? This latest phase of the MCU racks up a list of half-baked films. Thor: Love and Thunder, for example, is a slapstick comedy of dubious quality. The Disney+ series Secret invasion It’s a dream come true and my expectations for this one were through the roof.

Anyway, I’m done venting, I’ll close the brackets and get back to the text. The Disney CEO said at the conference that he recently had to make difficult decisions.
“You have to eliminate things that you no longer believe in, and that’s not easy in this business, because either you’ve already started and you have sunk costs or it’s a relationship with your employees or the creative community. It’s not an easy thing, but you have to make difficult decisions. We actually make these tough decisions. We don’t disclose it publicly, but we have already concluded some projects that we didn’t think were strong enough.”the executive declared.
It’s worth noting that Bob Iger did not comment on which of these projects were cancelled.
