‘I signed my death’: Chris Evans didn’t believe in Captain America

Today, most Marvel fans rightly believe that Chris Evans is inseparable from the role of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. After seven feature films (3 solo films and 4 Avengers) and cameos in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ant-Man and Captain Marvel, the actor bowed out after eight years of service at the end of the game.

And yet, his choice was not obvious!

as reported FandomWire by citing the work MCU – Reign of Marvel StudiosChris Evans felt he made a big mistake in signing the role:

I just signed my death. I finished my life. I was especially nervous about doing bad movies. I don’t want to make crappy movies and be contractually bound to make crap.

And indeed, contracts at Marvel are quite demanding for actors. We’ve gathered here all the officially known terms that those who sign up to play as a hero in this connected world must respect. And we are not far from the Ten Commandments!

For his part, producer Kevin Feige didn’t want to confirm Chris Evans because he already played Johnny Storm, as well as the Human Torch in the two Fantastic Four films released in 2005 and 2007.

We said to ourselves: Well, there is already another character (the human torch). Let’s continue the search. And since we couldn’t find anyone, we went back to the original list. Which brings us back to Chris. And I said to myself: Patrick Stewart played Jean-Luc Picard and Charles Xavier. Harrison Ford was Han Solo and Indiana Jones. We are not interested!

The difference is that Picard/Xavier and Solo/Jones didn’t belong in the same universe, but it was a really good choice: from the first minute of Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel managed to forget that Evan already had two fanfictions. He has four films behind him!

With the mantle of Captain America on his shoulders, Evans joined the role of Steve Rogers, and after The Avengers, then Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he was already undeniably in the role.

“Captain America: Civil War”

The new Captain America is Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), who used to be the Falcon in the Marvel Universe. His recovery shield was featured in Avengers: Endgame and his takeover in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier series available on Disney+. We’ll see him again in February 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World.
