Netflix: This sour and committed comedy is quickly gaining ground on the platform

Discover on the Netflix platform the French satirical comedy “Toy”, the first film by Francis Weber, shot a few years before the goat and already with Pierre Richard.

The billionaire and his young son are walking in the department store to choose a gift. The child of choice is the journalist who will be at his disposal and will become his toy. With this very simple principle, author Francis Weber has achieved the Tour de Force: the making of a satirical comedy for his first film, which is more relevant than ever more than 45 years after its release!

Currently available on Netflix, The Toy shows how a person who has enough money and power (played by Michelle Bouquet) can buy someone just to keep their child from flourishing. This is clearly the responsibility of poor François Perrin, who finds himself “playing for a little boy” in exchange for significant financial compensation.

Boss (bouquet) and “toy” (Richard)

The toy remains a comedy, but the feature film goes further and shows that no toy can change a father’s love for his son. A situation that clearly echoes Pierre Richard, Perrin’s translator, who also suffered from a lack of love from his father and a lack of recognition from him.

Funny, gentle and poetic, The Toy had no expected success at the time of its release, still 1.2 million admissions. The comedy had a second life during its TV appearances and eventually received the critical response it deserved.

The American remake even saw the light of day with Richard Pryor in the lead role, The Toy, which was released in 1982.
