Life and career of Akira Toriyama
Born in 1955 in Japan, Akira Toriyama began his career as a manga artist in 1978 with the manga “Wonder Island”. In 1980 he achieved his first great success with the manga “Dr. Slump”, a comedy that tells the story of a robot called Arale Norimaki.
In 1984 Toriyama began publishing his most famous manga, “Dragon Ball,” which became a huge worldwide success. The story follows the adventures of Goku, an alien warrior in search of the seven Dragon Balls, capable of granting any wish.
Dragon Ball has become one of the best-selling manga of all time, with over 300 million copies sold worldwide. In addition to Dragon Ball, Toriyama is known for other manga, such as “Cowa!”, “Chrono Trigger” and “Blue Dragon”. The artist has also worked as a character designer for several video games, including the “Dragon Quest” series.
Toriyama has received numerous awards for his work. Among these: the Shogakukan Manga Award and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Award. To date he is considered one of the most influential and popular manga artists in the world.
Works in progress
One of Toriyama’s works in progress was focused on his most famous franchise. The attraction of Dragon Ball Daima, the new animated series from Toei, was precisely the return of the creator of this universe both in the drawings and in the story itself.
During a panel on Dragon Ball Daima, executive producer Akio Iyoku said that Toriyama was “deeply involved beyond his usual capabilities” in the production process and suggested that he had planned “completely new episodes for the plot.”
From what the trailer shows, several classic Dragon Ball Z characters – for example: Goku, Vegeta and Bulma – will be transformed into children, similar to what happened to Goku in Dragon Ball GT. According to the trailer, the anime may explore metalanguage. This is because the villain seems to know Goku’s long history in several Dragon Ball anime and manga.
All Dragon Ball sagas are available on Crunchyroll. dragon ball is also available on Globoplay, together with Dragon Ball Z Kai (also available on Maximum). You can find Dragon Ball Z (and its films) at First Videofrom Amazon.
