Music consumption by female artists increases by 252% on Spotify

Consumption of music by female artists on Spotify increased by 252% between 2018 and 2023 in Brazil, according to a survey conducted in streaming, in honor of Women’s Month, and obtained by CNN Brazil. Globally the increase was 234%. The survey also showed that 60% of these artists’ streaming audiences are women.

For those in a hurry:

In an interview with CNN, Rodrigo Azevedo, music editor of Spotify Brasil, said that several reasons contributed to this growth. Among these, the curator highlights the growing presence of female artists in genres that were previously predominantly male – trap, funk and pagode, for example. She also cites the success of country artists (Marília Mendonça, Maiara and Maraísa, Simone and Simaria) who have paved the way for a paradigm shift.

The increase in collaborations between artists also contributes to this growth in consumption, especially those that include female voices in projects led by men. This highlights the importance of female representation in music partnerships.

On Spotify, the most listened to songs in 2023 were dominated by women, with Ana Castela, Marília Mendonça and Simone Mendes leading the top 3, followed by female collaborations on songs by Israel & Rodolffo.

Spotify’s editor highlights Mari Fernandez and Ana Castela as examples of artists who have contributed to the rise in female music consumption. According to Azevedo, they brought new styles and movements to Brazilian music, such as the agronejo and the boiadeira aesthetic.

The influence of these artists goes beyond music. It also affects fashion and cultural aesthetics. “Boiadeira,” for example, gained prominence as a concept influenced by Ana Castela and has been associated with international icons such as Beyoncé.

Spotify’s publisher has an optimistic outlook on the future. She believes that music consumption by female artists will continue to grow, driven by a changing narrative in the music industry and Generation Z’s growing interest in diversity and representation.
