Amnesty proposals for January 8 and Bolsonaro receive public support from 24 CCJ members

Projects blocked by the government, but achievable with a Bolsonarist deputy president of the most important commission in the Chamber, which has 132 seats between members and alternates

At least 24 members of the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) of House of Representativesincluding 14 members, posted publications on social media advocating amnesty for those involved in the January 8 coup attacks or to politicians declared ineligible for electoral crimes. In addition to the PL, the former president’s party Jair Bolsonarothe agenda meets the public sympathy of the republican deputies, Podemos and União Brasil in the collegiate church where these projects are being developed in the Chamber today.

The survey, conducted by the digital scenario and brand reputation analysis company Codecs at the request of Estadao, covers all MPs appointed as incumbents or alternates for the CCJ’s 132 seats in total this year. Six of them were not known until Friday the 8th and were excluded. The data also shows that 24 other MPs have publicly criticized the proposals, all from the president’s allied base Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The rest of the deputies, who make up the majority, remained silent on their Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X, formerly Twitter, accounts.

Although the opposing group has created almost ten times more publications, 1,337 against 135 contents online, the commitment is decidedly greater on the part of those who defend the amnesty of protesters and politicians. Of the 20 publications with the most interactions (likes, comments and shares), 16 came from the pro-project group.

Also at the CCJ, awaiting a speaker, there is a bill presented by MP Sanderson (PL-RS), co-authored by the same MP, which attempts to amnesty all those who have been convicted of electoral civil crimes or declared ineligible among the October 2016 and the date the law comes into force. The measure would directly benefit Bolsonaro, who has been barred from participating in elections for eight years due to a meeting with ambassadors before the 2022 elections in which he attacked Brazil’s electoral system.

The call for the amnesty agenda is, of course, greatest in the PL, which currently holds 13 seats in the CCJ. Of these, 10 members expressed support for the projects, as well as nine alternates. The champion of the publication is MP Júlia Zanatta (PL-SC). “How many more children will grow up orphaned by living mothers, imprisoned for political reasons? Just like our President Bolsonaro, I now advocate for amnesty. Rest assured that there will be much fighting in the House to alleviate the amount of suffering caused to these families,” he says in one of his posts.
