Desired by many, the golden statuette has already been rejected as a form of protest or by winners who did not even attend the award ceremony
Cinema’s greatest honor, the Oscar did not always reach the shelves of its winners. Over almost 100 years of existence, artists such as Katharine Hepburnawarded four times with the statuette for Best Actress, and Woody Allenalso awarded four times, but in the Best Original Screenplay category, they didn’t even attend the ceremony to receive their awards.
However, in the history of the award, there are still records of artists who declaredly refused the award, for very specific reasons. Next, remember four occasions when nominees and winners refused to see their names associated with the Oscar:
Dudley Nichols rejects Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1936
The screenwriter Dudley Nichols He was the first person in Oscar history to reject a gold statuette. In 1936, he won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Whistleblowerlong John Ford from 1935.
However, he declined the honor due to a series of disputes between the Hollywood Screenwriters Guild, of which he was one of the founders, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, responsible for organizing the Oscars.
After the historic refusal by O Whistleblower, Nichols was nominated on three other occasions – for The Long Journey Backin 1941, American Eaglesin 1944, and The Man with the Cold Eyesin 1958 -, but never won the award again.
George C. Scott rejects Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 1962
In 1962, practically 30 years after the victory of Nicholsthe controversial American actor George C. Scott stated that he had no interest in receiving an Oscar. He was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for Challenge to Corruption (1961), film by Robert Rossen starring Paul Newman, but rejected the offer. The prize ended up going to George Chakiris per Love sublime love (1961).
Interestingly, two years earlier, when he was nominated for the award for the first time, also in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in Anatomy of a Crime (1959), from Otto Preminger, Scott did not register refusal. At the time, he lost the prize to Hugh Griffithnamed by Ben-Hur (1959), from William Wyler. Was there resentment?
George C. Scott rejects Oscar for Best Actor in 1971
Even after refusing to George C. Scott In 1962, the Academy nominated the actor again at the 1971 Oscars, but now in the Best Actor category for Patton – Rebel or Hero?(1970), from Franklin J. Schaffner.
The actor finally won a golden statuette and the film’s producer, Frank McCarthyalso awarded the Oscar for Best Film that night, took the stage and received the statuette for Scottthanking the Academy for recognition.
However, the next day, he returned the figurine to respect the wish of George C. Scott, who considered the Oscar ceremony a parade created due to economic interests. Watch the victory record:
Marlon Brando rejects the Oscar for Best Actor in 1973
Marlon Brando – already winner of a Best Actor statuette for Thieves Syndicate (1954), from Elia Kazan – has also rejected an Oscar. Upon winning the Best Actor statuette for The Godfather (1972), Brandon Shockingly turned down the award.
Absent from the ceremony, he was represented by American Indian rights activist, Sacheen Littlefeatherwho took the stage to speak: “[Brando] regrettably cannot accept this generous award“, he said Littlefeather in his impromptu refusal speech, knowing he wouldn’t have time to read the actor’s several typed pages of prepared remarks.
“And the reasons for this are the treatment of Native Americans by the film industry [o público começa a vaiar] – excuse me – and on television, in film reruns, and also with recent events at Wounded Knee”, continued. The speech of Marlon Brando it was read in full in the press room after the incident.
After that, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to create a new rule, stating that no one could accept the award for a winner if he was not present at the awards ceremony.
