Oscars 2024: with 18 nominations, Netflix loses in almost all categories

It seems, at least in 2024, Netflix’s reign of Oscar statuettes has come to an end. Although it led the nominations, with 18 recommendations, the platform only took home one award. Not only the darling of other years, even Apple TV+, second place in the nominations, did not achieve a good result, not winning in any category.

According to Engadget, the awards ceremony was one of the biggest disappointments for Netflix, accustomed to collecting statuettes in a single night. At the 2023 Oscars, for example, streaming took home six awards, and in 2020 and 2021 another seven each. Only in 2022 did he win a single statuette, however Dog attack.

In total, Netflix has won 23 Oscars since 2017, but has yet to win in the Best Picture or Best Actor/Actress categories: this year it was competing with Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan (for Conductor), Annette Bening (Nyad) and Colman Domingo (Rustin).

It’s worth noting that, among streaming services, Netflix leads the 2024 Oscar nominations – this being the fifth consecutive year that the platform’s films have received more recommendations than any on rival streaming services.

Considering all producers, including traditional ones, Universal was also champion in nominations, with 13 categories thanks to the resounding success of Oppenheimer.
