The real reason John Cena showed up shirtless at the Oscars: it was more than a joke

The 2024 Oscars ceremony had memorable moments, such as the appearance of Messi the dog from “Anatomy of a Fall” to applause, in addition to Ryan Gosling’s performance of “I’m just Ken”, but one of the most viral moments it was the John Cena sketch with no clothes on.

Why did John Cena appear naked at the 2024 Oscars?

During the award ceremony, Jimmy Kimmel, who was the host of this award, shared that in 1974 a naked man appeared on stage, repeating the same sentence as an entrance for John Cena to do the same.

The former WWE wrestler, now Hollywood actor, appeared on the side of the stage, stating that he could not present the Best Costume category because he used the envelope that had the winner to cover his genitalia.

Although many thought it was a joke, as it was later covered with a curtain, it was actually an act of protest to support the dressmakers union, whose slogan is “You’re naked without us. ).

The profile of the movement thanked the star of the series “Peacemaker” on their social networks for the recognition of their cause, since it has not become as visible as that of the union of writers and actors.

It should be noted that John Cena was not really naked, since in several photos circulating on social networks the actor appears with pieces specially designed to cover his genitals and his butt.

“You’re Naked Without Us”, a movement seeking better conditions for costume designers

Last year, the writers’ union and the actors’ union brought Hollywood to a standstill for several months, demanding compensation for the shows, rights to use their image and other items, and now the demands of the designers’ industry union.

What they are asking for is a fairer contract with wages, since costumes are a very important element of films, in addition to intellectual property rights.

“What a character wears is largely what makes them recognizable or iconic. A movie or TV show starts with words and actors, and a costume designer’s job is to create an identity through a character’s clothes and style,” said Deborah Landis, CDG past president and costume designer.

Landis, who created the costumes for “Indiana Jones” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” music video, told Deadline at the Taormina Film Festival in Italy in June 2023 that his contracts should be the same as production designers.

“These old conventions are anachronistic, misogynistic and discriminatory. At the very least, our scale should be the same as the production designers. The people who create the characters and the people who create the place (where the characters are developed) should be paid the same salary.”

When it comes to intellectual property, Landis points out that designers don’t have a stamp or license, except that they get paid until the last day of work, which is why they’ve been pushing for better working conditions.
