Russell Crowe will star in this upcoming horror film as Father Gabriel Amorth, a real-life priest who served as the Vatican’s chief exorcist, performing 100,000 exorcisms prior to his death in 2016 at the age of 91. Amorth also wrote two memoirs, respectively titled An exorcist tells his story Yes An exorcist: other stories, where he spoke of his time fighting Satan and the demons who terrorized people. Screen Gems acquired the rights to The Life of Amorth (which included both memoirs) from Michael Patrick Kaczmarek and religious media company Loyola Productions, and Now The exorcist of the pope leaves the film studio with Crowe in the lead.

That said, it’s hard to tell if Screen Gems is looking to use it as a way to kickstart a shared universe / movie series, or if the studio is happy that this is a one-time deal. Some of Screen Gems’ recent horror offerings include the Grudge start over, do not breathe 2 Yes Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. the plan is for The exorcist of the pope which will start in Ireland in September, so as we get closer to the debut date, we hope to find out who else will join Russell Crowe in the film.
