This Monday, March 11, just a day before his birthday, Luis Gerardo Méndez announced through his official Instagram account what will be his new production in which he managed to assemble a first-class cast and return Belinda to the show : the series ‘Lies’.
The singer starred in the musical play ‘Today I Can’t Get Up’ in 2020, but she hasn’t done a movie since 2017 (she made a guest appearance on ‘Baywatch’) and hasn’t acted in a series since 2010 (‘Killer Women’) , although he was only in one episode, so actually since 2009 (‘Chameleons’) he hasn’t starred in a TV project, or at least a recurring one.
What is “Lies, the series”?
This new project is based on the successful Mexican musical theater play: Mentira.
The case concerns four women, with completely different personalities, who meet at the funeral of the man they once loved, who discovers that he has been murdered and that one of them is the culprit. By remembering their experiences with said subject, they plan to solve the mystery of his death.
All set in the 80s and set to music from the 30 most successful songs of the time by different artists such as Dulce, Mijares, Yuri, Rocío Banquells, Amanda Miguel, Emmanuel, among others.
Why did the musical theater play “Mentiras” become a series?
Luis Gerardo Méndez explained in a post from his official Instagram account, where he revealed to the cast of this new series, that since he founded the production company Cine Vaquero with his partner Gerardo Gatica, he wanted to do innovative, risky and exciting projects. except that he wanted to find a way to pay homage to theater and musicals on screen, since those were the places where he was trained as an actor.
Who is in the cast of ‘Lies, the series’?
The role of Emmanuel, the protagonist of the story, will be played by Luis Gerardo Méndez, a man who ends up married to two women and involved with two more, who ends up entangled in a web of lies that he put together and from which he cannot find now way out.
Belinda returns to acting in the role of Daniela, Emmanuel’s first wife, who since her teenage years dreamed of marrying him and living an ideal life.
Mariana Treviño, who originally played Lupita, Emmanuel’s secretary and lover in the theater, will play this role again, but now in the series.
After playing Chava and Isabel Iglesias in “Club de Cuervos”, Mariana Treviño and Luis Gerardo Méndez, who have proven to be an incredible duo, repeat in this series, only now, instead of brothers, they will be lovers, which some fans describe it as a multiverse of the hit Netflix series.
Diana Bovio, who has confessed that this production is “a dream come true”, will be Dulce, Emmanuel’s second wife, whom she knows on the verge of becoming a nun, being the nanny of Daniela’s little brother.
Regina Blandón will play Yuri, Daniela’s best friend, who ends up having an affair with her husband to get closer to her true love.
Who is the director and creator of the series?
Gabriel Ripstein (“A Strange Enemy” and “600 Miles”) created the series and will serve as director and showrunner.
Ripstein, Ilse Apellaniz and Natalia García Agraz are co-writers of the series.
“Mentiras” is a co-production between Cine Vaquero and Pez Caja by Andrea Gamboa (“A Million Miles Away”).
Velarde, creator of the hit musical on which the story is based, will serve as artistic director.
When does ‘Lies, the series’ premiere?
There is no release date for the series yet, as filming has just begun, however it is known that it will likely be this year and will be released exclusively on Prime Video, in over 240 countries.
