The EU’s foreign policy chief says the US needs to put more pressure on Israel over humanitarian aid to Gaza

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Thursday after meeting in Washington that the United States must put more pressure on Israel to allow more humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip, in what is been called a man-made disaster. .

Borrell said recent efforts, including by the United States, to bring aid to the Gaza Strip by air or sea are not as effective as land routes, which could see hundreds of trucks enter the enclave every day.

“We certainly hope that the US government will continue to put additional pressure on Israel to open the border and not impede humanitarian access,” he added.

Borrell, who met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday, said Washington was working hard to provide more humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Israel says it wants to “flood” the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid from multiple entry points, amid demands that something be done to avoid the risk of famine among the territory’s 2.3 million people.

“We have increased our humanitarian support, but it is certainly not enough,” he said. “And one fact that everyone recognizes is that there is a clear obstacle to humanitarian access from those who control the (Gaza) borders, namely the government of Israel.”
