Lula announces investments in RS and meets Leite, after criticism of his absence in the state

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will arrive this Friday, the 15th, in Rio Grande do Sul to announce projects and investments in the State, including resources from the Growth Acceleration Program (CAP). In the scheduled agenda, the head of the federal executive will meet with governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) and report on the actions taken following the floods recorded in the state last year.

In late 2023, Rio Grande do Sul was hit by heavy rains and floods, resulting in the deaths of thousands of homeless people. Lula did not fly over the affected cities. The absence made parliamentarians complain and recall the overflight that the president made in February of the same year in the rain-hit regions of the north coast of São Paulo.

Even without the presence of the president, the federal government sent delegations of ministers to the affected areas. In one of them, the first lady, Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, accompanied the trip to Rio Grande do Sul. At the end of September, Leite went to Brasilia to meet Lula and take stock of the actions taken so far by the federal management.

During Friday’s visit, the state governor plans to receive the president at Porto Alegre airport. They then participate in announcing the federal government’s actions and investments to the state. From there, Lula and Leite head to a lunch hosted by the president of the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Fiergs), Gilberto Petry, with some entrepreneurs.

Subsequently, the two will travel to the city of Lajeado to make new announcements and report on the reconstruction actions of the municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul after the floods recorded in the state.

New investments in the PAC

According to the federal government, the investment of the New CAP planned for this year in Rio Grande do Sul amounts to R$ 29.5 billion. For the program in general, adding the other years, an estimated R$ 75.6 billion for the State.

Works such as the duplication of the BR-116/RS, the construction of the second bridge over the Guaíba river and the completion of the dams are among the priorities of federal investments, as Palácio do Planalto reports in a released press release. “The construction of the University Hospital of the Federal University of Santa Maria, the Diagnostic Support Center and the Center for Assistance to Critical and Surgical Patients, both of the Conceição Hospital Group, is also planned.”

The investments also include the installation of 4 thousand kilometers of infoway and connectivity in 7,249 basic education schools, in addition to the expected completion of abandoned works in the capital and within the state. Including nurseries and nursery schools and primary schools. There will also be resources allocated to the energy transition and security, for ports and airports and for the housing sector.

According to Planalto, Lula will be accompanied by the vice president and minister Geraldo Alckmin (Development, Industry, Trade and Services) and the ministers Rui Costa (Civil Housing), Paulo Pimenta (Secom), Waldez Góes (Integration and Regional Development), Paulo Teixeira (Development agriculture and family farming), Carlos Fávaro (Agriculture and Livestock), Camilo Santana (Education) and Nísia Trindade (Health), as well as the Deputy Minister of Transport, Adrualdo Catão.
