The UN warns of a catastrophic famine in Sudan in the coming months

Nearly five million people could suffer famine in the coming months in Sudan’s war-torn regions of the country, United Nations (UN) humanitarian aid chief Martin Griffiths warned the Security Council on Friday. letter seen by Reuters.

Griffiths said high levels of hunger are caused by the conflict’s severe impact on food production, damage to important infrastructure and homes, cuts to trade flows, rising prices, barriers to accessing humanitarian aid and large masses of displaced people.

“Without urgent humanitarian assistance and access to basic necessities… nearly 5 million people could fall into catastrophic food insecurity across regions of the country in the coming months,” he wrote.

He said people in West and Central Darfur are likely to fall into these conditions as security conditions worsen and the lean season begins. The arrival of humanitarian aid from Chad and Darfur constitutes a “vital and crucial link”, she said.

According to Griffiths, approximately 730,000 children in the country will become victims of severe malnutrition, including more than 240,000 in Darfur.

The war in Sudan began on April 15, 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The UN says about 25 million people, half the country’s population, need help and that 8 million have had to abandon two homes.
