This week, an ad from retailer Americanas went viral on social media for customers to use FGTS (Service Time Guarantee Fund) to purchase chocolate eggs.
Although it is not possible to directly use this fund to purchase products at the market, the announcement is actually related to the birthday withdrawal, a type of FGTS that allows workers to withdraw a percentage of their fund once a year.
Ame Digital, the retailer’s digital wallet, allows workers to make this withdrawal in advance so they can get the money in time to do their Easter shopping. However, this option, being a type of loan, involves interest, which can further compromise your income.
In any case, the announcement did not go unnoticed and became a meme on social media. “My parents’ generation bought a house with the FGTS, mine bought an Easter egg, neoliberalism is destroying what’s left of this nation,” commented one Internet user.

To the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, the merchant confirmed the existence of this advertisement and stated that this financial service is just another payment option for the consumer. “[O FGTS] It is widely used by different sectors of the economy, including retail and, with the establishment of the birthday collection, it can now be used for purchases in different categories of its store network,” he specifies in a statement.
