Robinho trial: how long can the former striker stay in prison in Brazil?

The former player could have a defined future this Wednesday (20)

The Superior Court of Justice will evaluate whether to approve Robinho’s sentence this Wednesday (20th). The former striker was convicted of gang rape in Italy and could serve a nine-year sentence in Brazil. The trial will begin at 2pm (Brasilia time).

In 2017, Robinho was convicted by Italian courts of having participated in a gang rape four years earlier. In 2022 the former striker had his sentence confirmed as a last resort, without the possibility of appeal, but he did not end up in prison because he was in Brazil.

Brazilian law does not allow the extradition of native citizens and for this reason Italy has asked that the former player’s sentence be served here. Last Sunday (17), Robinho spoke about the case on social media, claimed to have evidence and declared himself innocent.

The crime occurred in the Sio Café nightclub in Milan on 22 January 2013. The victim was a young Albanian woman, who was celebrating her 23rd birthday at the time. In addition to Robinho, five other Brazilians were also accused of participating in the rape.
