Dorival Jr coached 11 of the 26 athletes he called up to the Brazilian national team

The coach makes his debut on Saturday at Amarelinha, against England. Seven athletes were among Dorival’s last two victorious works

As Dorival Jr’s debut for the Brazilian team approaches, the coach also takes the opportunity to reconnect with old acquaintances. After all, of the 26 players called up for these FIFA data, 11 have already been trained by the Canary Islands coach in clubs.

After playing for several Brazilian football clubs, Dorival comes from a great job with Flamengo and Sao Paulo, respectively in 2022 and 2023. Therefore, it is precisely from these two works that the majority of this list of 11 names comes: seven players.

Of these names, some were unable to take the field with the coach, as happens instead Blessed AND Rodrygo. The goalkeeper was Santos’ reserve at Furacão and was an option on the bench while Dorival was there. In the case of the attacker, the former Peixe player only had a few training sessions with the professional team when he was emerging in the youth categories.

On the other hand, two of them owe a lot to the current coach of the Brazilian team: João Gomes AND Beraldo. The midfielder was not an absolute for Flamengo in 2022 with Paulo Sousa and oscillated between starter and reserve. With the arrival of Dorival, however, the midfielder took over and was one of the highlights of the Copa do Brasil and Libertadores titles. In 2023, the defender was enjoying a good period with Rogério Ceni at Sao Paulo, but it was Dorival who made the athlete one of the best defenders in the country in the season that ended with another Copa do Brasil title.

Known in the council

If among the players there are some that Dorival has already trained, there are also those on the Brazilian team’s board of directors who have already worked with the coach. Rodrigo Caetanodirector of the CBF, e Johntechnical coordinator, were alongside the commander outside the four lines.

Rodrigo was executive director of Vasco between 2009 and 2011, in Dorival’s first stint at Cruz-Maltino. Together, after all, they won the Série B in 2009 and brought the club back to the elite. At Fluminense, however, the duo’s work didn’t work. In 2013 the two were ahead of the Tricolore in the season that ended with relegation to the second division on the pitch. Fluminense, however, remained in Série A as Portuguesa were relegated due to Héverton’s irregular formation and loss of points in the final standings.

Juan, in turn, was with Dorival Jr in the manager’s last two spells at Flamengo. In 2018, still as a professional athlete, he was unable to play due to an Achilles tendon injury in September of the same year. At the time the defender underwent surgery and remained unavailable for a long period. In 2022, however, Juan was a football coach, a similar position to the one he currently holds at CBF.
