“Dune: Part 2” breaks box office record in 2024; see the numbers

I have never hidden my admiration for Dune. I agree with the various analyzes according to which Denis Villeneuve’s film constitutes Lord of the Rings of this generation. Or the Star Wars. Sure, there have been other great science fiction films in these decades, but these two that I mentioned have raised the bar of the seventh art segment.

I believe that Dune will follow this path. And the numbers confirm the theory. Dune: part 2 This week it reached the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office. It is the first film to achieve this feat in 2024. And this happened in less than 20 days after release!

Since it was produced on an estimated budget of $190 million, Dune: part 2 is already considered a profitable film for its studio, Warner Bros. The performance is so good that Dune has already been compared to another recent big screen phenomenon.

Last weekend – its third – the film grossed $28 million in the United States and another $55.2 million internationally. Compared, Oppenheimer in the same period it raised $29 million in the US and $55.6 million in the rest of the world – in other words, very similar numbers.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, the biography of the father of the atomic bomb grossed approximately $320 million in the United States and almost $965 million worldwide.

The expectation is this Dune: part 2 approaching or even surpassing that goal. The film is still shown everywhere, even in Brazil.

Although it has not been confirmed by Warner Bros., it is almost certain that yes, we will have a third film! The third and last directed by Denis Villeneuve. At least that’s what the director said in an interview with Time magazine.

The director wants to adapt the book The Messiah of Dune for the cinema. I can’t say much about the plot so as not to spoil Part 2. But, for those who have already seen it, this is an immediate sequel – one that will show Atreides becoming less and less of a hero.

In this regard, Timothée Chalamet himself recently stated that he would easily return for a third part:

“The dream is to do another one. Obviously this movie [Duna: Parte 2] You have to have some success to secure a third. But everyone is super into the game. How could I not be?”he told Reuters.

Well, as we saw above, the film has already achieved success! Based on the numbers recorded so far, Dune: part 2 It even surpassed its predecessor.

The first film, from 2021, achieved a box office of $402 million worldwide, approximately R$1.9 billion. The production was a real success and even took home six Oscar statuettes. The expectation is that Part 2 will increase this shelf of rewards.
