After Martin Scorsese’s 2019 large-scale crime thriller The Irishman, we thought Robert De Niro would say goodbye to gangster roles. This is not so! The 80-year-old actor recently starred in The Flower Moon Killers Martin Scorsesewill play a dual role as godfather to Alto Knights (formerly The Wise Guys).
The unforgettable Jimmy Conway from Goodfellas slips into the costume of the iconic figures of organized crime: Vito Genovese and Frank Costello.
The film has changed its release date. We will now have to wait until March 19, 2025, a delay of over a year.
The air of Cosa Nostra
This drama about the Italian-American mafia in the 1950s will be directed by Barry Levinson, Rain Man and Good Morning Vietnam. In addition, the 81-year-old director has already directed De Niro in The Sleepers and The Wizard of Lies.
In 1957, Vito Genovese wanted to kill Frank Costello, but his assassination attempt failed. Injured and diminished, Costello will do anything to escape the criminal world and retire. This is the story told by The Wise Guys, whose screenplay was written by a big name: Nicolas Pileg.
The story of “wise boys”.
The latter has signed scripts for Goodfellas and Casino directed by Martin Scorsese. Fun Fact: The title of the book Goodfellas is adapted from is called Nice boy. Thus, the connection between the 1990 film and Barry Levinson’s film is obvious. 90-year-old Nicholas Pileggi clearly did not end the world of gangsters. Note that this Frank Costello has nothing in common with Jack Nicholson in The Departed.
In this particular case, screenwriter William Monaghan took the name of a famous mobster for this feature film, but was inspired by another criminal figure for the character: James White Bulger. The latter was the godfather of Boston’s underworld for more than 50 years until he was arrested in 2011 after a very long stint.
In the coming months, Robert De Niro should be seen in a film called Ezra, the trailer of which can be seen above. The feature film, which also stars Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne, will soon be released in France, distributed by SND.
