Storm leaves more than 1 million people without electricity in RS; lessons suspended in 28 municipal schools

A strong one storm that hit Rio Grande do Sul left more than one million customers without electricity in the state. In Porto Alegre, 28 municipal schools they had to close the doors due to lack of electricity. The situation has caused inconvenience to thousands of students in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul.




According to an investigation by the Municipal Department of Education (Smed), 28 of the 99 municipal schools in Porto Alegre remained without electricity during Thursday morning. Mayor Sebastião Melo announced that a new evaluation will be carried out in the afternoon to determine whether it will be possible to resume lessons.

In addition to Porto Alegre, other cities in the state were also affected by the storm, including big river, Cachoeirinha, New Hamburg AND Deep step. Institutions such as the Liberato Salzano Vieira da Cunha Foundation and the Santa Luzia Early Childhood Education School have suspended their activities due to damage caused by bad weather.

The Federal University of Rio Grande (Furg) also had to suspend in-person classes on several campuses, including the municipalities of big river, Santa Vittoria do Palmar AND São Lourenço do Sul. Lack of electricity it affected 1,152 million customers in the State, mainly in the Equatorial CEEE and RGE Energia areas. Authorities estimate that service will be restored by the end of the day for most affected customers. CEEE Equatorial’s director of customer relations, Marvin Ramgrab, assured that the company is committed to resolving the problems caused by the storm.
