BRASILIA – A joint operation by the Federal Police (PF), the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) and the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) has arrested three suspected of being the masterminds behind the murder of councilor Marielle Franco and the driver Anderson Gomes Sunday, 24th.

The preventive arrest comes after the indictment of former police officer Ronnie Lessa, identified as responsible for the execution of the councilor and her driver, Anderson Gomes, in March 2018. Investigators are also working to uncover the motivation for the crime.

The PF action, called Operation Murder Inc., also followed up on 12 search and seizure warrants issued by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in the capital Rio de Janeiro.

The operation also has the support of the State Secretariat of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro and the National Secretariat of Criminal Policies (Senappen), of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. According to the PF, the operation is also being investigated for crimes of criminal organization and obstruction of justice.
