A new look and a new series, but rest assured it’s still the same Doctor! The Time Lord makes his return in the guise of Nkuti Gatwa. The return, which will take the form of a reboot, after the latter’s two-way regeneration, will air in late 2023 during the sixtieth anniversary episode.
First broadcast on the BBC in 1963, Doctor Who follows the adventures of an alien who travels through time and space in a Tardis. Accompanied by a companion on his journey, the latter has the ability to change appearance (and thus his interpreter) each time he is mortally wounded.
A new beginning for the iconic series
Nkuti Gatwa lends his qualities to the fifteenth version of the Doctor. He succeeded, in particular, David Tennant, Matt Smith and even Jodie Whitaker, the only actor who played this character. The Sex Education-exposed actress is, in turn, the first performer of color to be cast in the lead role of the iconic program.
In this season, which is considered as the new season 1, Millie Gibson will make her debut in the series. Ruby Sunday’s interpreter may be leaving the series at the end of this season, although her departure has yet to be officially confirmed by Doctor Who.
For the first time, the series is broadcast simultaneously in England and around the world. While the program will still be offered in its country of origin on the BBC, it is Disney+ that now holds the international rights to Doctor Who.
Therefore, the new season can be seen on the streaming service from May 11, with one episode per week.
