Paul Rudd hurt Jennifer Aniston on the set of “Friends”: he thought he was going to be fired from the series

Paul Rudd joined the cast of ‘Friends’ in 2002. In seasons 9 and 10 of the TV series, he was played by Mike Hannigan, Phoebe Buffay’s boyfriend and eventual husband. However, in the early days of filming, he was involved in an accident with Jennifer Aniston that he believed almost cost him his job.

Paul Rudd had an accident with Jennifer Aniston on the set of ‘Friends’

During his visit to “El Hormiguero” in mid-February, the 54-year-old actor recalled one of his stories on the set of “Friends”: when he accidentally bumped into Jennifer Aniston.

According to what he said, “in the second episode” he had to record, actress Rachel Green “had hurt her leg and couldn’t walk without crutches,” so she had to ride a “segway,” a kind of motorized skateboard.

At the time, “it was a new thing,” so his partner didn’t hesitate to ask him if he was interested in trying it: “She said, ‘okay, but be careful,'” she warned before lending him her vehicle.

“I went up, turned around and ran over his leg. The bad leg,” recalls Paul Rudd about his accident with Jennifer Aniston on the set of “Friends.”

Although he assured him that “nothing happened”, the producers had a different reaction:

“I kept looking at the producers and the horrified look on their faces, followed by ‘we’ve already shot all his scenes and we can fire him once and for all.’ That was the expression they had,” said his interpreter Mike Hannigan.

Fortunately, this incident did not affect his friendly relationship with Jennifer Aniston. In 2019, when he told the joke for the first time, Paul Rudd also said: “I don’t even know if we’ve ever talked about it. “He was so important in our lives.”

Paul Rudd Didn’t Think He Should Be In ‘Friends’ Final

Mike Hannigan’s character was such an important part of the series that he remained until its end. He is even by Phoebe’s side when the main characters say goodbye to Monica’s apartment.

In February 2023, Paul Rudd recalled this experience as “weird”:

“I felt strange. I mean, I was in the last episode and I was like, “I shouldn’t be here, I have a front row seat to things I shouldn’t see.” Everyone was crying, everything was emotional and I was like ‘wow’. I mean, I felt very privileged. But I also thought, ‘I just want to sit here and not get in the way,'” she told “Heart Breakfast.”

In that interview, Paul Rudd also described his experience filming Friends as “fun” and “surreal.” On the one hand, “everyone was great,” and on the other, he joined the cast “at the end” (in season 9) and “I never knew I’d be in so many.” [episodios] as I was.”
