In Goianiacapital of Goiás, a planting program of trees in front of residents’ homes has increasingly attracted resident participation. The Disque-Árvore consists of planting seedlings of native Cerrado trees in front of the homes of residents who request it.
Since it was launched on 5 June 2021, during World Environment Week, the free service has responded to almost 9,000 requests.
“We provide the intelligent service, where, through access to WhatsApp, the resident sends two photos of the facade of their home. Through them, our technicians identify the best species, following criteria such as pavement width, presence of electrical cables and proximity to plumbing connections so that the resident can have a tree without having future problems such as cracks in the pavements,” says Ormando Pires, superintendent of environmental management and licensing at the Municipal Environment Agency (Amma) of Goiânia.
The service is active all year round. On average, a resident’s request is fulfilled in three to five days.
“If there is a request, we forward it to the technical team and subsequently to the operations team to provide assistance. Through our nursery, which is located in the northern region, near the campus of the Federal University of Goiás, we make the floor plan and our The team goes to the site and plants the seedling in front of the door of the resident’s house. He is only in charge of watering the plant,” adds Amma’s superintendent.
There are currently more than sixty thousand seedlings of at least 80 species in the nursery. “We prefer trees already adapted to the Cerrado, where the climate is hot and dry. We plant many ipê and fruit trees from the biome,” adds Pires.
A month ago, mechanic Lourival Ferreira da Silva, 64, asked for a tree to be planted in front of his residence in Rua 11, in the Água Branca sector, in Goiânia. According to him, he has received all the instructions and is now taking care of his little plant. “I submitted this request because I thought the initiative to improve the city’s reforestation was interesting,” he said.
To make Goiânia the greenest city in the world, the municipality is also working on two other axes. “‘ArborizaGyn’ involves a large planting action that we carry out in degraded areas of the city, normally at the beginning of November, when the rainy season begins. ‘Rearboriza’ is a program that serves urban streets that suffer from a shortage of trees in in this case, our technicians carry out the design and plant a type of vegetation suitable for each location”, reinforces Amma’s superintendent.
Pires also cites the benefits of reforestation for the city. “The tree always brings a great benefit, especially for large centers where more and more new properties are sought. Goiânia, being located in the Cerrado region, experiences up to six months of drought. In this way, we must give more and more priority to the reforestation,” he says. .
While not mentioning the resources available, Pires adds that the cost is low and the benefits are great. “We already have our routine activities in the parks, what we do is to further adapt this demand. If there is a request, the ‘Disque-Árvore’ van, which is in service in a park, already responds to some requests in the region , thus optimizing the planting service of the seedlings”, he concludes.
To request the planting of seedlings in Goiânia:

- Once the location is approved, a team schedules and travels to the resident’s home to plant the seedling and provide the information needed to care for the vegetation.
In Suzanoin the São Paulo metropolitan region, the municipality, through Viveiro Municipal Tomoe Uemura teams, planted 2,120 trees across the city in 2023.
There, the planting involves native Atlantic Forest trees that directly contribute to the ecological restoration of the region. Part of the action is carried out by ‘Disk Árvore’, a municipal nursery project to work with the population to encourage reforestation actions.

In Boituva, a city inland from São Paulo, the city hall donates seedlings to residents. Distribution takes place at the municipal nursery located inside the Parque da Cidade, in Rua José Amádio, 110, in Jardim Oreana, from 1pm to 3.30pm. In 2023, more than a thousand seedlings were donated.
