“Patrick Swayze didn’t need that!” : The John Wick 4 star is tearing up the Road House, and we mean it

Scott Adkins really didn’t like the Road House fight scenes. And he does it famously. A true action movie star, we recently saw Scott Adkins in John Wick: Chapter 4. We can also see him in Day Shift, Metal Trap or American Assassin.

He doesn’t appear in Jake Gyllenhaal’s latest film Road House – a remake inspired by the 1989 film – which features a certain Elwood Dalton, a former MMA champion turned bodyguard, facing off against the fearsome Knox, a murderous killer played by Conor McGregor. But the fight scenes still make a strong point.

Although he said he enjoyed the film, he freely expressed his distaste for the CGI fight scenes on X (formerly Twitter):

I really liked Road House. Doug Liman – Great job on the genre and subverting Gyllenhaal in an amazing way, respect! What a start for @TheNotoriousMMA , glad a movie like this is doing well because it’s my bread and butter but hey, what are those CGI fight scenes! Swayze didn’t need it.

Scott Adkins compares the new Road House fight scenes to the 1989 Patrick Swayze version, cites his own experience in action, and shares an interview he conducted with someone he admires:

For those impressed with the new Road House battles, let’s not forget this Johnny Nguyen He did it in 2006 on a very low budget film a rebel. I was shocked when I realized this. When used in moderation, this effect can have an incredible impact. Watch the full episode here

Although CGI irritated him, the actor admits that it can be used to good effect in fight scenes. He cites Johnny Nguyen’s low-budget action film The Rebel to show that effects that are rarely used can be effective. But he doesn’t think CGI was used well in Road House.

How much CG is used in Road House?

Jake Gyllenhaal went through months of intense training to ensure his body could actually match that of a real UFC fighter. The film also featured real-life UFC officials and fighters, including McGregor, Jay Hieron and Dana White.

But the film still used computer generated images. Many of the action sequences, including the fight on the boat and in the bar, use CGI. It was mainly these action scenes that dampened our enthusiasm.

Patrick Swayze never needed CGI for the first Road House, and according to Scott Adkins, the remake failed to use the effects subtly enough to make them effective.

If anything, he says it made the film feel unrealistic, despite the real fighters that make up its cast. The fights are super clean and look effortless, which is just not possible in real life.
